Free agent catcher Victor Martinez wrapped up his new deal before Black Friday, and I'm disappointed to say it wasn't with the Rangers.
The best catcher on the market was high on the Rangers wish list, but he chose the offer from the Detroit Tigers which has been reported to be around $50 million over four years. Martinez will split time between catcher and designated hitter with the Tigers. The Rangers would probably have done the same thing, in addition to some action at first base.
In not unrelated news, Bengie Molina has said that he will put off retirement for at least one more season and play somewhere in 2011. Missing out on Martinez keeps the catcher and designated hitter spots wide open, and I wouldn't be shocked if the Rangers decided to retain Molina and Vladimir Guerrero and field basically the same offensive team that went to the World Series.
