Catcher Max Ramirez, who was designated for assignment along with Clay Rapada to make room for Brandon Webb and Arthur Rhodes on the 40-man roster earlier this week, was claimed today by the Boston Red Sox and will join their organization. This comes as no surprise, as Ramirez was traded to Boston last off season for Mike Lowell, until the deal was killed by Lowell's failed physical. Boston now has both Ramirez and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
The Rangers still haven't made a corresponding move on the 40-man roster to cancel out Adrian Beltre's addition. When that happens, I'll make note of it here and update the other pages on the site as well.
Lastly, from what I saw of the press conference introducing Adrian Beltre, the new third baseman will be wearing #29, which belonged to Julio Borbon the last two years. It's not uncommon for younger players to give up their numbers for incoming veterans, and usually the veteran compensates the younger guy somehow. I remember when the Rangers acquired shortstop Royce Clayton in the late 90's, he wanted his number #11, but Lee Stevens had it. Stevens traded him the number for a shotgun. No...really.
There haven't been any reports about Borbon being into shotguns, however.
