Notes from Day 3 of MLB Winter Meetings, Part 2

Ok, my brain is turning into mush after all of today's rumors.  I don't feel like I quite have a grasp of them all, but I'll share what I've seen and what I think it all means.  I was at church tonight and away from the computer for about four hours, so it took a while to catch up on what was written while I was gone, and I might have missed a detail or two, but here it goes anyway.
  • Cliff Lee:  Lee's agent has left the Winter Meetings to go speak with Cliff and his wife.  The Yankees made an offer today, somewhere between $137.5-$150 million over six years.  TR Sullivan wrote that the Rangers have not made a formal offer, but have requested that the agent let them know what it will take to get him back in Texas, and to do so as soon as possible.  Reports say that an agreement should be reached by the end of this weekend.  I'm glad this is almost resolved, but I'm afraid of what the outcome will be.
  • Carl Crawford:  (UPDATE:  Reports say that the Red Sox just agreed to sign Crawford for seven years and $142 million.Plan B if the Rangers don't bring back Lee could involve Crawford.  The Rangers let his people know that they are interested.  The speedy outfielder will command a contract similar to the Jayson Werth deal (seven years, $126 million).  The Angels are widely thought to be the front-runner for Crawford.  I think bringing in Crawford would be awesome, but that's a lot of money for a speed guy.  Some of those types slow down over time and he's not the kind of offensive player that can command that kind of money if the speed is gone towards the end of a long contract.  My gut feeling is that he's going to the Angels, but not until after Lee signs.
  • Zack Greinke:  The Rangers are still talking to the Royals about Greinke, and there have been rumors saying they have been trying to get a third team involved to get a deal done.  The Rockies and Marlins have both been mentioned as joining the fun, but there are conflicting reports and my head hurts too much to decide which ones are closer to the truth.  Good to see the Rangers are getting creative if that's what it takes to get Greinke.  He is not going to be traded until after Lee's decision is made.  There are other teams still talking to the Royals about Greinke, but the Rangers are thought to have the best match of talent to send back to the Royals.  My guess is that if Lee goes to New York, the Rangers will definitely do what it takes to get Greinke.
  • Matt Garza:  The Rangers have talked to the Rays about Garza, but they are not the only ones.  The Brewers also talked to the Rays, but didn't get very far.  The Cubs also have interest, and reports say that they are the current front-runners.  Garza would probably fall into the Plan C or D range for Texas.
  • Michael Young:  Ken Rosenthal reported that the Rangers spoke to the Rockies, Cardinals, Angels, and Dodgers about Young since last night.  Reports are conflicting on whether the Rangers are initiating these conversations or are just fielding calls from interested teams.  Young has spoken out saying he doesn't want to go anywhere else, and he can actually block trades to 22 of the other 29 teams.  I still don't see him going anywhere, and I hope that these rumors aren't putting a bad taste in his mouth.
The meetings end tomorrow with the Rule V draft, but there will be plenty of news spilling over into the next week or so.  I'll be here with my reaction when the news happens, or shortly thereafter.

1 comment:

  1. The Red Sox have reportedly signed Crawford to go along with the trade they made for Adrian Gonzalez. Both are left handed hitters. The Yankees just got more motivation to do whatever it takes to sign Cliff Lee. Not a good sign for the Rangers.
