Jeff Francoeur's stint with the Rangers was a short one. He was traded for Joaquin Arias on the last day of August and played well with the Rangers in September, getting plenty of at bats against lefties while Josh Hamilton recovered from his rib injury. He had a big hit in the first game of the playoffs, but didn't produce much after that, besides the awesome playoff beard.
Francoeur signed a one-year contract with an option with the Kansas City Royals today. He can make up to $3 million per year if he meets the incentives in his deal. He won't turn 27 until January, so he still has time to re-establish himself as a productive, everyday right fielder. He was a highly touted prospect when he came up with the Braves a few years ago, but lost his groove and ended up with the Mets before coming to Texas.
It would have been great to keep him around, especially since he's such a positive clubhouse presence, but he is in a position where he does not have to settle for a platoon role yet, which is what would have been the case here. The Royals made a good pick up.
